Microsoft today announced that it has acquired Affirmed Networks, a company that specializes in software for mobile carriers. Affirmed Networks offers a virtualized cloud-native network called Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) that lets communication service providers scale with the demands of mobile services. The startup also offers a cloud-native platform for 5G and a range of capabilities in automation and orchestration. Microsoft has been working with a number of telcos on integrating edge computing capabilities with 5G networks and Azure cloud services. AT&T is one of Microsoft's biggest partners in the 5G space. "At Microsoft, we intend to empower the telecommunications industry as it continues its move to 5G and support both network equipment manufacturers and operators in their efforts to find solutions that are faster, easier and cost-effective," said Yousef Khalidi, corporate vice president of Azure Networking, in a Microsoft blog post. Founded in 2010, Affirmed Networks' technology is deployed in more than 85 networks worldwide. Customers include AT&T, SoftBank, Vodafone, and more that use its services to deploy and scale their mobile services. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Read more -here-
