Offering a potential boon for the entertainment industry, chip company Marvell unveiled a new broadband solution April 20 that can deliver Internet connectivity that is 100 times faster than what's currently available to consumers.

Relying on fiber optics, as opposed to the current copper-wire infrastructure delivering most of America's broadband, the technology, dubbed Avanta, can deliver up to 2.5 GB per second to a home, allowing for real-time streaming of HD 3D content, huge multiplayer gaming experiences, and multi-person, high-definition video conferencing.

"We can improve home entertainment," said Simon Milner, VP and GM of Marvell's Enterprise Business Unit. "TV has remained fundamentally unchanged in 50 years, and we think we can to it better,"

Dale Bonner, co-chair of the California Broadband Task Force, said Marvell's solution has the potential to "bring to market an entire new scale of services and entertainment."

Pointing to a barrier of entry into massive multiplayer games such as World of Warcraft, game developer Robin Hunicke said the possibility of Internet connections this fast could open up all sorts of new games "as connected as Facebook, but look like a walk through a sun-lit forest. It's tactile. It's real."
