Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said Monday that he plans to spend $10 billion of his own fortune to help fight climate change. Bezos says that he will 'begin issuing grants this summer' as part of this initiative.

"Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share," Bezos said in his post. "This global initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs — any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world."

This isn't Bezos's first big climate announcement, of course. In September, the world's richest man committed Amazon to a "climate pledge" to reach net-zero emissions by 2040. That announcement came after months of protests from employees wanting the company to do more on climate change, especially in comparison to tech peers like Microsoft and Google.

Amazon has frequently been called out for its tendency to use lots of packaging to send small items — numerous social-media posts have documented this, with people sharing images of relatively small items in giant boxes.
