At CES 2014 Intel announced a PC into an SD card-sized casing. Dubbed Edison, the micro-microcomputer marks the chip giant's first attempt to address the emerging wearable computing business. The tiny computer is built on the company's 22nm transistor technology, runs Linux and has built-in WiFi and Bluetooth modules. What's more, the tiny machine can connect to its own app store. Naturally, the device is aimed at developers, who will use it to build the next generation of wearable and connected devices.

"Wearables are not everywhere today because they aren't yet solving real problems and they aren't yet integrated with our lifestyles," says Intel CEO Brian Krzanich at CES 2014. "We're focused on addressing this engineering innovation challenge. Our goal is, if something computes and connects, it does it best with Intel inside."

To encourage developers to work on this new platform, Intel has announced a "Make It Wearable" competition to challenge developers to incorporate Edison into new wearable devices. Details of the competition were not announced, though Intel did say that it will offer some $1.3 million of prizes in total-with a top prize pegged at $500,000.
