OpenAI plans on using its AI models to help develop a humanoid robot, a project that is also receiving investment from Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. On Thursday, OpenAI announced it's among the companies investing in Figure, a robotics startup in California, which has raised $675 million in its latest Series B funding round. Figure is less than two years old and doesn't have a commercial product but is persuading influential tech industry backers to support its vision of shipping billions of human-like robots to the world's workplaces and homes. "In conjunction with this investment, Figure and OpenAI have entered into a collaboration agreement to develop next generation AI models for humanoid robots, combining OpenAI's research with Figure's deep understanding of robotics hardware and software," the startup said. For OpenAI, which dabbled in robotics research before pivoting to a focus on the AI large language models that power ChatGPT, the partnership will "open up new possibilities for how robots can help in everyday life," said Peter Welinder, the San Francisco company's vice president of product and partnerships, in a written statement.
