Hackers stole customer credit cards in Newegg data breach

2018-09-20 16:37 by

Online retailer Newegg suffered a security breach that left customer credit card details exposed for around a month, according to a new report. The site was hit by the same hackers behind the recently disclosed British Airways breach, as well as a previous one involving Ticketmaster in the UK. Customers impacted by the security issue will be notified by email.

The data exposure was found by cyber security firm Volexity and threat sniffer RiskIQ, which explained that hackers had got into the payments page of Newegg's website by injecting 15 lines of JavaScript malicious code into it. It appears the breach was confirmed by Volexity on August 16 and removed by Newegg on September 18, meaning it was active for around a month. Anyone who entered their credit card data during the period should immediately contact their banks.

"Yesterday we learned one of our servers had been injected with malware which was identified and removed from our site," the company said in a statement on Twitter. "We're conducting extensive research to determine exactly what info was obtained and are sending emails to customers potentially impacted. Please check your email."

Newegg is one of the largest retailers in the US, making $2.65 billion in revenue in 2016. The company touts more than 45 million monthly unique visitors, but it’s not known precisely how many customers completed transactions during the period.
