Google to sell cellphone plans

Google is reportedly planning to offer cell phone service as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) through the networks of Sprint and T-Mobile. The search giant intends to buy access to the two companies' networks and then sell mobile plans directly to consumers. The launch of the service will probably be later this year.

Pricing or availability of Google's cellular service plans are not clear yet, neither are the phones to go along with it. However, according to reports, the company will offer both unlimited and pay-as-you-go plans. Also, it is highly possible that service packages are sold through an online store, rather than a brick-and-mortar retail store.

If the plan comes true, Google would join other companies that already operate as mobile virtual network operators, such as Ting, Tracfone, and Republic Wireless.

Traditionally, MVNOs offer their customers lower rates and more flexible plans than the larger wireless carriers from whom they buy wholesale voice and data access.
