Google Responds to European Union Antitrust Charges

Today Google offcially responded to European Union's antitrust authorities' accusations of manipulating its search results to advantage its shopping services at the expense of those of rivals. The company argues that the "allegations are incorrect," and it hadn't done anything that harmed consumers.

"We believe that the Statement of Objections's preliminary conclusions are wrong as a matter fact, law and economics," Google general counsel Kent Walker said in a written statement. "These kinds of developments reflect a dynamic and competitive industry, where companies are continuing to evolve their business models and online and offline markets are converging," he added.

To defend itself, Google noticed that the EU report didn't take into account the fast growth of companies like Amazon.com Inc. and eBay Inc. According to the search giant these firms pose a new competitive threat, probably bigger than Google is for comparison-shopping companies like Nextag and LeGuide.

The search giant could face billions of dollars in fines if accusations prove to be true. The final decision will probably be made around the end of the year. Google is also under investigation for dominating position of its Android OS in Europe, although no formal charges have been filed.
