Google launches a data center in Cuba

Google has started running its own servers in Cuba, becoming the first foreign internet company on the island.

The servers are part of the Google Global Cache (GGC), a global network that locally stores popular content, like viral videos, for quick access. In the new data center in Cuba, the giant will store information such as popular YouTube videos.

For decades, Cuba was cut off from the U.S. and its companies—until former President Obama reopened America's diplomatic relations in July 2015. Shortly after relations were re-opened, many U.S.-based firms, including Google, saw an opportunity within the nation.

"I think this will be very noticeable for Cubans," said Doug Madory, director of internet analysis at Dyn, a global internet monitoring company. "The internet in Cuba will still be a painfully slow process. This is just another somewhat rare step forward. For Google services, which will be hosted in country, it will be a milestone."

Of course, the benefits will only reach Cubans who already have access to the internet.
