Google developing "Brillo" OS for Internet of Things

Google is reportedly developing a new Android-based operating system, called Brillo, intended to power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. While current versions of Android are aimed at devices with at least 512 megabytes of memory, Brillo will work on 32 or 64 megabytes of RAM.

IoT, or the "Internet of Things," refers to devices that can connect to and communicate with one another, like fridges that talk to other household appliances, smart coffee makers, connected sensors, etc.

Currently, there is no universal operating system for the Internet of Things. Google is not alone in this initiative. Other organisations planning to set up IoT standards platforms include the Open Interconnect Consortium, backed by Samsung, Intel, HP and Cisco and the AllSeen Alliance, backed by Microsoft, Qualcomm, Sony and LG.

Google is expected to launch the code for the new operating system next week at Google I/O, the company's conference for software developers.
