German researchers achieve world record in wireless transmission

German researchers have set a new world record achieving wireless transmission speed of 6GB/s over a distance of 37km. This is 10 times faster than any data transmission method.
For the experiment, the scientists used the Band E millimetre wave frequency of 71-76GHz which is regulated for terrestrial and satellite broadcasting. This is the only frequency range capable of reaching such a transmission rate, according to documentation released in support of the findings.
One radio transmitter station was located at the top of the 45 storey high Uni-Center building in Cologne, while the other station was placed on the site of the Space Observation Radar TIRA at the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR in Wachtberg.
Research into the E band is ongoing, it has the potential to be a cost-effective way of delivering high quality internet to remote and rural areas.
