Georgia Tech project arms consumers against restrictive ISPs2011-08-04 10:26 by DanielaTags: DD-WRT, Tomato, Bismark
Georgia Tech researchers have developed a few related projects intended to help people find out whether they are getting the bandwidth they are paying for. The projects are called Kermit and Bismark. Bismark, is DD-WRT- based code for routers that collects data from home networks. Kermit is a tool that will tell users how their network connection is performing based on data that Bismark collects. Kermit works by showing the user a simple view of all the home's devices connected to the Internet: computers, mobile devices, digital video recorders, game systems or anything else that's networked. At any moment, Kermit can show who's using the Internet, whether through a desktop or mobile device and it can also limit a device's speed. The user can even limit or prioritize a specific machine's traffic. These tools provide user friendly interface, making the work with them easy even for non-tech-savvy users. Read more -here-

Its about time we moinitored the ISP's. This technology will let us know if we are getting what we are paying for from them, personally I thing ISP's throttling our connections or limiting our bandwidth is ridicules.
All they are doing is trying to find ways to make more money out of their comsumers, if the consumers are armed with this tech, then they can fight back on the ISP's and demand what they are paying for and also stop the throttling and bandwidth capping. Which is wrong, what that does is tells gamers you can't play your games on our service. Which will be a downfall of our Internet usage. We have made strides to make the internet faster, now the ISP's like Comcast want to throttle the speeds and cap the bandwidth usage to its users. Why have fast internet at all if they are going to slow it down again? The people of this Great Country should get on line with their congressmen and let them know of their concerns and demand something to be done about that. All companies like Comcast are trying to do is get richer off their users. |
