FCC adopts online privacy rules

In a 3-2 vote, the FCC today adopted new privacy rules that will regulate the way that ISPs collect and share users' data.

Basically, the rules require that ISPs that collect data must get explicit permission from users before selling that data to third parties. The rules apply both to home Internet service providers like Comcast and mobile data carriers like Verizon Wireless.

This means that consumers may forbid Internet providers from sharing sensitive personal information, such as app and browsing histories, mobile location data and other information generated while using the Internet.

"This was probably the best day we've had on Internet privacy — commercial Internet privacy — maybe ever," said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. "We got a breakthrough."
