Facebook owner Meta plans to create Twitter rival

Meta has shown staff plans for a text-based social network designed to compete with Twitter, sources have told the BBC. It could allow users to follow accounts they already follow on Instagram, Meta's image-sharing app.

The new standalone app will be based on Instagram and integrate with ActivityPub, the decentralized social media protocol. That will theoretically allow users of the new app to take their accounts and followers with them to other apps that support ActivityPub, including Mastodon.

Dubbed "Project 92" in internal documentation later seen by The Verge, the new app will pull from Instagram to automatically populate a user's information - potentially making it easier for people to jump right in. Coding began in January, and Meta plans to launch the app (possibly with the name "Threads") as soon as it can.

"We've been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run, that they believe that they can trust and rely upon for distribution," Meta chief product officer Chris Cox said, per a Verge report. Celebrities including Oprah and the Dalai Lama have both reportedly been attached to the project.
