EA to shut down Origin launcher this April

Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the end of Origin, its 14-year-old game launcher. The company will sunset Origin this April, forcing gamers with EA titles to open them via the newer EA app.

The decision to shut down Origin is reportedly linked to a decline in 32-bit software support. Windows 11, which will officially usurp Windows 10 when the older operating system retires this October, doesn't support 32-bit applications; Apple has also spent the last several years dropping 32-bit software. Because Origin itself is 32-bit, it's compatible with far fewer computers these days than it was when it debuted in 2011, meaning it's finally time to say goodbye.

EA introduced the EA app in October 2022 after an open beta period. The new launcher looks a lot like its biggest competitor, with a Steam-like interface and even a darker color scheme. EA assured users that logging into the EA app would sync their Origin local and cloud saves, as well as their friend lists. Users can also merge their friend lists with those they'd built on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation.

The Origin launcher will stop working on April 17. PC users interested in switching to the EA app should have a 64-bit version of Windows 11 or Windows 10. Mac users will need to run macOS Catalina 10.15.5 or later.
