Democrats promise to fight for net neutrality

A group of Senate Democrats have expressed their willingness to defend net neutrality rules as they are now if the new Federal Communications Commission chairman attacks them.

"We have strong net neutrality rules in place today, the court upheld those rules, the issue is settled," Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey said during a press event on Capitol Hill.

"Net neutrality rules ensure that those with the best ideas, not simply the best funded ideas, have the opportunity to share their content with the world," Markey added. "But now the big broadband barons and their Republican allies want to turn back the clock and make big cable and big cellphone companies the gatekeepers for internet access. And they have a new FCC chairman in Ajit Pai who will do their bidding."

The senator's statement comes after Trump pointed FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai as the new FCC chairman. Pai has long been an opponent of the agency's rules, which he called "a radical departure from the bipartisan, market-oriented policies that have served us so well for the last two decades."
