Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts has announced that the company plans to launch its own wireless service by the middle of next year. It will be similar to Google's Project Fi and will use a combination of Comcast's deployed WiFi hotspots and Verizon's 4G LTE network.

Comcast will rely first and foremost on its network of public Wi-Fi hotspots, which currently number around 15 million across the U.S. When a Comcast wireless customer can't use Wi-Fi the phones will use Verizon's network to stay connected.

At least initially, Comcast will limit wireless service to areas it already services with cable, targeting both current and potential cable subscribers, rather than going with a nationwide roll out. Pricing is unknown yet.
