Comcast begins rolling out gigabit cable connections

Comcast has recently announced that it will launch DOCSIS 3.1-powered gigabit Internet service in five cities across the country in 2016.

Initially, it will be available in Atlanta and Nashville, and later in Chicago, Detroit, and Miami. Exact deployment dates haven't been revealed. The company has already tested its gigabit internet service in Philadelphia in December 2015.

"We're constantly working to ensure that our customers get the fastest speeds available, and that they get them first," Comcast Central Division President Bill Connors said in a statement. "DOCSIS 3.1 represents a tremendous step forward in our commitment to keeping customers at the technology forefront. Combined with all the upgrades we have already put into our advanced fiber optic-coax network, this technology will not only provide more gigabit speed choices for customers, it will also eventually make these ultra-fast speeds available to the most homes in our service areas."

The new DOCSIS 3.1 standard, allows the company to offer gigabit speeds to homes without the need to invest money in deploying fiber lines. Comcast says most customers will simply need a DOCSIS 3.1 modem to handle the speeds.
