Chinese hackers breach American Airlines and Sabre

A group of Chinese hackers has been suspected of attacking the computer systems of U.S. airline company American Airline Group Inc and travel reservations platform provider Sabre Corp.

According to people familiar with the matter, those are the same hackers who had targeted insurer Anthem Inc in February and the U.S. government's personnel office in June. Another U.S. airline operator, the United Continental Holdings Inc. was also a victim of the hackers in May or early June.

"We are working closely with our partners to further investigate," American spokesman Casey Norton said, adding that the company takes cyber threats seriously and goes "above and beyond any notification requirements."

"The Chinese are what I would call the bullies of cyberspace: Everybody knows what they're doing, but nobody can stop them," said Tony Lawrence, chief executive officer of VOR Technology, a cybersecurity firm that works with U.S. defense agencies. "These state actors, their job is to gather intelligence on other nations."
