Chattanooga offers 10-gigabit Internet service

The city of Chattanooga, Tenn., has recently announced that it will offer a 10Gbps broadband service to its citizens powered by Alcatel-Lucent's TWDM-PON broadband technology. Provider of the service will be the city's proprietary power utility company - Chattanooga Electric Power Board.
"Five years ago, Chattanooga and Hamilton County became the first in the United States to offer up to 1-gig Internet speeds," said Harold DePriest, president and CEO of EPB, in a statement. "Today, we become the first community in the world capable of delivering up to 10 gigs to all 170,000 households and businesses in our service area."
The service will cost $299 a month and will be available to every home and business within a 600-square-mile area. Lower speed rates are also available. Customers may choose between the 3-gigabit and 5-gigabit options aside from the standard 1-gigabit service priced at $69.99 per month.
10Gbps is 10 times faster than Google's Fiber service and much faster than traditional Internet service providers.
