Charter Communications says they have restored internet services for hundreds of thousands of Charter customers that lost internet access Saturday afternoon.

Kim Haas, a spokeswoman for Stamford-based Charter Communications Inc., said the company was working to restore service, adding that the issues were "intermittent across parts of our footprint." It was unclear how widespread the problem was, but Charter customers from as far away as Montana and Minnesota complained about slow or defective Internet service on Saturday.

Charter released a statement Sunday afternoon saying:

"Charter Communications reports services have been restored following an Internet outage that affected multiple markets across its operating area including Missouri and Illinois on August 23. Technical teams are monitoring the network closely and continue to investigate the cause of the issue."

Stamford, Connecticut-based Charter is the fourth largest cable operator in the U.S., according to its website. It also provides phone services and serves customers in 29 states.
