California rolls out digital license plates2018-06-01 17:38 by Daniela
Some license plates in California are about to go digital. Sacramento is the first California city to be testing out the plates, according to the Sacramento Bee. A couple dozen digital plates will be used on the city’s fleet to test out the technology. The new plates use the same computer technology as Kindle eBook readers, along with a wireless communication system. They feature their own computer chips and battery. GPS location data from the license plate can also be shared with police to help track a vehicle. However, the privacy concerns around the GPS capabilities of the digital plates has purportedly already caused issues for the city. The plates are not cheap – coming in just under $700, plus an $8 per month service plan – and are not available through the DMV. Drivers will have to go to a dealership to have the digital plates installed. Read more -here-
