AT&T waives data cap during coronavirus

AT&T announced it would lift its broadband data cap overage fees temporarily as the COVID-19 coronavirus forces people to stay in their homes.

As millions of US citizens are forced to work, videoconference, and learn at home, such restrictions could easily increase the financial burden on consumers that are likely to see some significant financial hardships in the wake of a shaken economy. US consumers already pay some of the highest prices for broadband in the developed world.

"Many of our AT&T internet customers already have unlimited home internet access, and we are waiving internet data overage for the remaining customers," the carrier said. "Additionally, through Access From AT&T we'll continue to offer internet data to qualifying limited-income households for $10 a month."

AT&T imposes monthly data caps of 150GB on DSL, 250GB on fixed wireless, and 1TB on most of its faster wireline services. Overage charges are $10 for each additional 50GB, up to a maximum of $100 or $200 per month, depending on the plan.
