AT&T TV launches in handful of test markets

AT&T has officially launched AT&T TV, a streaming alternative to its DirecTV and U-verse services, in select U.S. markets. The service is now available in parts of five states: Orange County and Riverside, California; Corpus Christi, El Paso and Odessa, Texas; West Palm Beach, Florida; Topeka and Wichita, Kansas; and St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri.

AT&T TV will be able to work with both an app and a dedicated streaming box. The app will be the same AT&T TV app that AT&T TV Now users will use and allow for streaming on phones, tablets, smart TVs and TV platforms.

In a throwback to traditional pay-TV practices, it requires a two-year contract, with packages starting at $59.99 a month for about 70 channels. After the first year, the price bumps up to $93 a month. Qualified customers can bundle AT&T internet service and TV starting at $89.99 a month for the first year of the contract.

AT&T TV is built on the DirecTV Now backend using the same apps but is a very different service. DirecTV Now is being rebranded to AT&T TV Now but do not confuse the two as they are different services with different packages. Just like how DirecTV and DirecTV Now had similar names but different packages, rules, and features as will AT&T TV and AT&T TV Now.
