Apple could pay up to $862 million after losing patent lawsuit

Tech giant Apple turns out to be the loser in a recent patent case. U.S. District Court in Madison, Wis. has ruled that the Apple had infringed on a University of Wisconsin patent and this could cost the company $862 million in damages.
The patent in question improves chip efficiency in computer processors. It was granted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998. The patented technology was invented by four UW-Madison microprocessor architecture researchers.
Apple has been accused of using this technology without permission in its A7, A8 and A8X which are found in the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus models and the iPad.
The University's non-profit patent management body, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), sued the giant in January 2014. In court documents, Apple claimed that the patent was invalid and that it didn't infringe on it. It also unsuccessfully insisted the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to review WARF's patent legality.
The precise amount Apple may have to pay will be decided at a later stage in the court proceedings. Representatives for Apple and WARF haven't yet commented on the matter.
