Amazon is now offering its "Just Walk Out" technology to retailers for use in their stores, the e-commerce giant confirmed on Monday. The technology, which powers the cashier-less Amazon Go stores, lets customers pick up what they want in a store and walk out, without the need for a checkout line.

To be clear, the technology being sold is to allow retailers to offer their own customers the ability to shop and pay for items without having to wait in line to pay at a register. It's not intended to allow retailers to run a franchise of the Amazon Go convenience stores.

"Just Walk Out technology enables shoppers to simply enter a store, grab what they want, and just go," the company says. "Born from years of experience at Amazon Go, Just Walk Out uses a combination of technologies to eliminate checkout lines. We now offer retailers the ability to leverage this technology in their stores to help bring fast and convenient checkout experiences to more shoppers."

And while Just Walk Out technology has the potential to reduce the number of people needed to staff a store, Amazon says it won't eliminate retail workers. Just Walk Out stores still need people to answer customer questions, restock shelves, and check IDs for customers who want to buy alcohol. As Amazon puts it, retail workers will be "shifted to focus on more valuable activities."
