Amazon cancels plans for New York headquarters

2019-02-14 18:19 by

Amazon announced Thursday it cancels plans to build its second headquarters in New York City, the company said in a statement.

"After much thought and deliberation, we've decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens," Jodi Seth, an Amazon spokeswoman, said in a statement. "We plan to create the 25,000 jobs that were supposed to happen in NYC across our current tech hubs network in North America."

The decision comes after an outcry from local politicians, union leaders and community organizers who had organized weeks of protests against massive financial breaks promised to Amazon, one of the world's most valuable companies. Many activists said the project would worsen congestion in the area and lead to gentrification and higher housing prices.

The company put the blame for its decision squarely on the shoulders of politicians who had objected to the development and been critical of city and state leaders for offering Amazon huge tax subsidies.
