Archer, a California-based electric aircraft maker, will introduce 100 of its five-person air taxis to the United fleet. These mini planes will only be used as shuttles, going back and forth between Newark Liberty International Airport and the Downtown Manhattan Heliport on Pier 6. "We are confident we will be the first company to certify an eVTOL aircraft in the US with the FAA," founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said yesterday at the reveal of the company's 12-rotor flagship. So far, details on price, how many times the shuttles will run per day, how guests can book, and where else they hope to connect haven't been released. San Jose-based Archer is among several companies building a new type of aircraft called an EVTOL, short for electric vertical takeoff and landing. These aircraft employ the same electric motors, batteries and computer controlled propellers that power drones, but they're big enough to carry humans and must pass government safety tests.
