Adidas has warned millions of U.S. customers of a potential data breach. The sportswear maker said that its U.S. e-commerce website was breached this week and personal data, including contact information (addresses and email addresses), and encrypted passwords may have fallen into the hands of criminals, but was able to reassure customers that neither financial nor fitness information was at risk.

The company said it found out about the problem Tuesday, when "an unauthorized party" claimed to have acquired some of its consumer data. Adidas is conducting a forensic review and is alerting customers it believes could be affected.

"Adidas is committed to the privacy and security of its consumers' personal data. Adidas immediately began taking steps to determine the scope of the issue and to alert relevant consumers. Adidas is working with leading data security firms and law enforcement authorities to investigate the issue."

The disclosure marks the latest in a series of data breaches at major companies across a broad swath of industries, including retailers Hudson's Bay and Under Armour, aerospace giant Boeing, airlines such as Delta and natural gas pipelines and electric utilities.
