191 million US voters' records exposed in online database

2015-12-29 09:50 by

A security researcher has recently found a publicly-available database containing the personal information of 191 million voters on the internet.

Chris Vickery, a tech support specialist from Austin, claims that he uncovered the database while looking for information exposed on the Web in an attempt to raise awareness of security breaches.

The misconfigured database contains miscellaneous information for a voter, such as full name, home address, mailing address, a unique voter ID, state voter ID, gender, date of birth, date of registration, phone number and political affiliation. A detailed voting history since 2000 is also available. Fortunately, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers and sensitive financial data are not part of the database.

It is still not clear who is the owner of the database and who is responsible for the data leak. Vickery said that he is working with U.S. federal authorities to find the owner so they can remove it from public view.
