also theres a few settings in advanced tab which are different to mccoffee's settings. mccoffee's speeded my connection up, whilst "optimal" appeared to slow it down.

Another bug? When I installed 5.1, it added ati....cli.exe "runtime" to HK_USERS and HK_LOCAL_MACHINE, which took ages for pc to startup. I disabled (using a startup manager) the one in HK_USERS as its the same "runtime" switch.

Starts up much quicker now, control centre works fine as well as ...

I have speedtouch (330) on Wanadoo 1MB and had drop outs yesterday, I used TCPoptimiser week ago so, its more likely as mccoffee said overheating or network problems.

I chose optimise, but changed TTL back to 128, is that more reliable than 64?

with sygate, unclicking "act as server" for every application (applications>advanced) stealths all ports. this is recommended on the sygate forums. worked for me.....

Is Ad Muncher a popup stopper? try google toolbar (or msn toolbar etc) they have built in popup blocker, use no resources and are more accurate.

For spyware, I wouldnt use webroot aswell. Adaware and spybot are the usuall choice for scanning, for prevention spyware blaster is best, I would also use ...

the help says full system scan, scans whole computer with all options on. ads scan is for NTFS volumes, mines FAT32 so I guess I wont need that. the customise button (scan settings) only effect the custom scan, as the other scans use fixed options.

is avast still picking it up, the latest virus definitions should fix it, there was a discussion on their forums at http://forum.avast.com/?lang=ENG about this false positive, which they seem to have fixed, I also had the alert.

unticking "act as server" for IE6 in applications>advanced, stealthed port 80 on mine. thats only needed if your a website server, shouldnt really be open otherwise, for incomming connections (server).

Ive tried restoration, pc inspector and hand recovery and when recovering files, .doc .xls etc just give format errors and .txt just contains garbage, even with recently deleted files.

I use the below temp cleaner, it can be set to remove files older than x days ie 7. at startup or manually and which temp folders to scan. Easier than manually I think.

IESPYAD is also good and popular, it adds huge list of spyware sites to IE restricted sites zone. So it doesnt even need to known what spyware is currently out there, just the sites.

If ad-aware detects them, then assume their spyware. Ive had cgi-bin and quarantining them did no harm, so I blocked it in IE6 privacy settings so dont get them anymore.

Checked backup option was on
Ran it.

But it didnt create a backup after removing an obselete menu item (fastnet99, old host manager I uninstalled) from IE Tools menu.

The path "c:\program files\hijack this" is in the registry so its ...

I play DVDs using RealPlayer, which I think comes with the decoder/software as it plays ok.

But my WMP9 won't play dvds and the WMP9 help says it doesnt come with decoder/software and you must use your own. I'm not sure how to do that..

Both are latest versions.

It worked today, but still briefly shows that redirect url before the update url in the status bar. Maybe its normal and if I had broadband it would be so quick you wouldn't see it?

my "Tools>Windows Update" doesnt work, it goes to this url and says cant reach server:

I checked the sygate forums and they said the update button doesnt always work with new builds. New build 2525 is available in free and pro versions and can be downloaded in full from there site.

Just make sure you have the resident protection set to High (or customise settings), to scan created/modifed files and not just opened files.

Normal setting doesnt do this! (Thats where reviewers get it wrong and complain of downloaded viruses being missed)

True. I had testicular cancer last year and got through it thanks to modern chemo to reduce chance of recurrence (still have checkups).

So helping in anyway to provide a cure for all cancers would be great.

Im running avast (free version) seems quite good. Gets good reviews similar to AVG and both often beat Norton etc at detection.

I like the option to scan during screen saver and boot scan (pre-windows start if/when needed)
Auto updates 1-3 days
