router

For some odd reason netgear routers won't work with RR, as mine would not work but i bought a linksys router and it works great. I know of several people around my area that their netgears won't work.

Node

I work for Cox Communications in North Carolina and we put a limit of 200 modems per node and RR(road runner) has a limit of 250. We have already split two nodes due to modem count and will do so again if needed. Your isp knows if your or any nodes they control are loaded so don't let them fool you ...

speed

Maybe this will help you understand some. The 3meg that they are selling you is only guaranteed on their network...ie from your modem to their server. They cannot guarantee the speed of the internet or sites that are not in their control which is understandable that is why they told you your thru ...

node

Actually guys number of modems per node does indeed matter.Me being a Broadband Network Tech my co-worker and i had to install a new SA prisma node(1&2) 1 forward fiber and 2 return fibers due to modems.(rr spec is 250 per node and Cox Communications is 200) Think of it like this pour a little sand ...

DC-6

a DC-6 is a directional coupler. the thru leg looses about half a db and the tap leg(goes to the modem) looses 6 db. better signal to the tv and keeps the modem talking louder.

Hook-up

I would suggest using a DC-6 or a DC-9 as it will keep your modem talking louder and better signal to your tv set.

Why don't you bring ur buddies modem over to ur house and see what happens. if it is still bad then i would say you have a drop problem because his is working fine next door. If it works great with his modem then i would say it is your modem. I use the Toshiba PCX1100 and love it....

Sorry it took me so long to reply, but there is a way for them to fix the problem if it is actually an overload of modems that is causeing it. depending on the kind of node. I know that with the kind we are useing(Scientific Atlanta Prism) we have had to install what is called a BDR 1 in 2 combiner ...

A 64mb card would help, but your prossessor also factors in as well. ATI and G-FORCE make cards with video outputs that can run to a tv monitor. They are not to expensive either.

Personally, i would suggest the Toshiba PCX1100. Great modem and stouter than most others. I work for Cox Communications and have had the liberty of testing several modems and was more impressed by the Toshiba than the others, but as some may say its just my word against theirs.

I work for a cable company and i will let u in on a secret. The horrible pings are probably due to your node(the are where the fiber turns into coax) is probably overloaded with modems. The return fiber can handle only so much traffic(like pouring sand through a pipe, the more sand you try to pour ...
