Re: DSLReports, that other broadband forum seems down for the count

IIRC, I joined both DLSR and SG in 2001. Perhaps because DLSR seemed to have more information pertinent to my particular networking concerns back then, my interaction here decreased to less than sparse. Thank you @Philip for supporting the notice about Broadband Bulletin.

tHE_One: are you comfortable that adding this setting on a Win2k machine where there are multiple resources on the same IRQ will not cause some other functionality that has its own (larger) RAM allocation to end up with less?

If I understand the conclusions of the Nexland router flail we had here recently, then the following is true. If your PCs are at 1500 and your router is at 1492, then, for most low-cost routers, you will get fragmentation on uploaded WAN data. LAN data rate will be maximized, and downloaded WAN data ...

Good luck getting the search engine on this site to look for 3-letter acronyms, which most of ours are, e.g., MTU, NIC, and TTL. I don't know if this is a limitation of vBulletin or a setting of the moderators.

I had actually tried the ping commands I hadn't previously known about on my work NT4 PC last night. I thought I had sent an addendum to this thread on the results. I don't think the absence of a "tunnel wrapper" in the RFC necessarily keeps DSL providers from inveigling Wind River into adding such a "feature." I imagine you can question "rmrucker" more concisely on this subject than I can.

Bob:

My question doesn't relate to fragmentation, but to how Verizon's servers manage to deal with packets which may or may not have this Tunnel Wrapper included. Does the packet just get passed along to the ultimate destination, say, Speedguide.net, where the wrapper is somehow ignored?

and Bob hasn't reported Nexland's answer on why they use MTU = 1472. I conjecture one of the following is true:

c) They are trying to find out if all PPPoE ISPs conform to the RFC before answering
c) They ...

If we don't know what Nexland's definition is, then we don't know what Nexland "MTU" value will get us to _our_ definition of 1492 + 8 = 1500.
