Re: DSLReports, that other broadband forum seems down for the count
IIRC, I joined both DLSR and SG in 2001. Perhaps because DLSR seemed to have more information pertinent to my particular networking concerns back then, my interaction here decreased to less than sparse. Thank you @Philip for supporting the notice about Broadband Bulletin.

tHE_One: are you comfortable that adding this setting on a Win2k machine where there are multiple resources on the same IRQ will not cause some other functionality that has its own (larger) RAM allocation to end up with less?

If I understand the conclusions of the Nexland router flail we had here recently, then the following is true. If your PCs are at 1500 and your router is at 1492, then, for most low-cost routers, you will get fragmentation on uploaded WAN data. LAN data rate will be maximized, and downloaded WAN data ...

Thanks for the update Bob. I still plan to eventually experiment with Verizon to check its WinPoet limitations, and possibly thereby infer its PPPoE max MTU limitations. Unless someone here already knows that Verizon DSL will work with PPPoE at 1492 and save me a bunch of configuation and experiment ...

I had actually tried the ping commands I hadn't previously known about on my work NT4 PC last night. I thought I had sent an addendum to this thread on the results. In a system that has nationwide LANs, WANs, routers, frame relays, T1 lines, etc., but no PPPoE links I assume, the max ping packet ...

I was so impressed by the communication stability improvement with the Nexland router over WinPoet I hoped to never use WinPoet again. Fortunately for the future of this proposed test, WinPoet is still installed on my home machine, just disabled, although I will have to rediscover just what I ...

Well, its been 8 days since Nexland was first pinged....
and Bob hasn't reported Nexland's answer on why they use MTU = 1472. I conjecture one of the following is true:
a) No one there remembers why it was 1472
b) They internally disagree over the proper MTU size
c) They are trying to find out if all PPPoE ISPs conform to the RFC before answering
c) They ...

I ran the Optimizer at 1472 after setting the router to 1472 on the LAN side. All seems well. I haven't tested exact performance, but as I didn't have a speed problem before, I probably won't notice a vast improvement.

So, the order of modification should be....?
If the optimal WAN/LAN value is 14XY, the order in which I change parameters should be what? Let me guess the following:
a) I shut down my ADSL modem and change the Nexland WAN value to 14XY, unless XY is 1472 where it is now.
b) I change the Nexland LAN value to 14XY. When I hit the "change ...

I would greatly appreciate that, Bob
If we don't know what Nexland's definition is, then we don't know what Nexland "MTU" value will get us to _our_ definition of 1492 + 8 = 1500. Or, to put it another way, I don't know what Optimizer MTU value will set the PC packets to conform to a given Nexland MTU value. All this, of course, begs ...

I have examined the optimizer. If I follow your directions, I expect to end up with an MTU=1492 LAN connection and an MTU=1472 WAN connection. Wan Mtu Vs Lan Mtu
My Nexland ISB SOHO router reports that the WAN speed is 1472 (on a PPPoE connection to Verizon) and that the LAN connection to my PC is 1500. These are either default or negotiated, I'm not sure. Speedguide.net TCP/IP Analyzer detects 1472, as expected, but suggests 1500. I assume it cannot detect ...

QChain saved me a bunch of rebooting time, even after belatedly installing SP2 to cut the number of claimed needed hotfixes. Although none of the remaining 8 hotfix articles seemed to apply to my case, I installed them anyway and a script with QChain worked like a charm.
