The router will give you some security in that id uses NAT. I would recommend the Netgear RT314 router which I have had for over 6 months and has run flawlessly. It is fast to and I have noticed no slowdown in speed since I am behind the router now. You should be able to pick it up for under $100.

If you have multiple pc's then the router is the way to go. If you only are using 1 then just stick with the ZoneAlarm.

Also yes you could still run zonealarm on your pc's behind the router.

Take care.

Well NAT is Network address translation. What happens is that your IP from the IPS is placed on the router along with your other settings. Then your pc with have an ip address of usually something like 192.168.0.2. So your router is the location that the probes go to hiding your pc. With the Netgear most all ports are blocked with the newest firmware showing " stealth " on the online security scans.

Really unless you plan on adding pc's to your network in the future you are probably just as well of with ZoneAlarm.

Thanx for explaining NAT For me hoov appreciate it...

Do you guys agree with hoov..

that unless i have pc's in a network that i shouldn't get a router..?

i mean would a router benifit a security freak like myslef...Or is zone alarm doin what a router would For Me..?

Even if theres a 2% security increase bye installing a router i would do it..and i think NAT would be a great thing to have..Sounds Good anyway.

Anyone else have any routers to recomend to me or suggestions.?

For 1 computer you are not using the function a router is used for. You can get netgear rt314's now for next to nothing with rebates ( I bought one for the hell of it because in the end it cost about $30), so if you want to experiment, and learn the basics of routers go with this router.
If you really want to learn routing get on E-bay and look up cisco 2500 series routers, buy a book and begin learning. :)

KID,

Did you get broadband? I remeber you mentioning dial-up before...do they make PPP routers vs. E-Net? I guess they must, as I have seen ISDN routers before.

I don't think that a NAT router in the Linky/Netgear class is going to improve your security over ZA. You will be disappointed by your BI logs because NOTHING unsolicited will get through. You might as well drop blackice and keep ZA for outbound/trojan protection.

The whole RedWorm thing has my router and modem going crazy but nothing at all hits the ZA log.

I agree with Greed that if you want to learn about configuring routers, you should get something a little beefier than Linky or Netgear. They take about as much knowledge to configure as ZA does. Not knocking them (especially since I have the Linky) but they aren't terribly exciting.

I have a Nexland ISB Soho router I learned about on this site. The Soho does PPPoE much better than Verizon-supplied software. That alone would justify its purhase.

I use this router with only one computer. It filters out a lot of junk that would otherwise have to be processed by Tiny, with attendant possible pop-up permit/deny requests. For example, I saw no Code Red traffic because it didn't get to the computer.

The router has no effect on Tiny or Black Ice, and is fairly invisible to the computer. There are a few cases where a Tiny rule may be needed, but you will see them when they first occur.

If you really want to do something to make yourself more secure WK, go get an old 486 or P1 and use it as a dedicated firewall.
The details on how to set them up are available. I am sure I can locate for you if you want to.
Ya must be able to find an oldie down there to do the job. ;)

If you really want to spend a bit of money then off to Harvey Norman with $500 (au) and buy a NetComm 'Smart-I-Share 56'.
Plug and Play Router, Hub, Modem and Firewall with 4 user spaces on the box.

Ask yourself....
Do I test as safe using the online scanners?
Closed or Stealth?
Using ZA Pro set to high on the Internet and Medium on the Local
the results should be Stealth.
Providing you use the AV program to scan any and all attachments/floppy Disks/CD's before you open them, your risk will be very low but never the optimum nil. The only way for that to happen is by pulling the connection forever.
The only other thing to do is keep up to speed with the latest patches and events.
