Suggestion on using a spare computer

Hi guys,

I got a computer sitting around at the moment, what are some interesting things I can do with it?

Specs:
AMD XP2400+
512MB DDR Ram
40GB 7200rpm HD
ATI Radeon 9600Pro
Onboard sound (Got a better sound card sitting around)
DVD/CDR

I am thinking of running linux? File server? Home theater ...

Problem fixed.

It was because the circuit for the front audio is not closed. When the front audio is not connected, I must use a jumper in the RIGHT AUDIO OUT / RIGHT AUDIO RETURN and LEFT AUDIO OUT / LEFT AUDIO RETURN pins to close the circuit.

I just put together a PC which has onboard sound. It's AC97 5.1 channel sound, comes with this motherboard: http://www.foxconnchannel.com/Product/motherboard_detail.aspx?ID=en-us0000167

Thanks. I think that might sound like a good solution for me. I think it would make sense to upgrade the PSU as well.

Another question: If i add a card that support 2 SATA port, can i still run 2 other one off my other SATA port on the MB? Should i keep the system as is, or should i make the main ...

I would go with just sata drives, save the ide for CD/DVD roms

Whats the purpose of this rig, just storage?

Getting a new mobtherboard really means PCIe graphics, so a new card, and DDR2, so new ram.

If all you need is 4 drives I would get a PCI sata controller card and add it to your setup and ...

What would you guys suggest in terms of hardware wise? What's a good motherboard that would support 4 drives?

Modem/Router question

Hi guys,

I have DSL service with Bell Sympatico (Canada). When i connect the modem straight into my computer, i am not getting an IP. However when i use WAN Miniport (PPPoE - putting in user/password in windows), i can connect to the net.

Now, when i connect the modem into router and have the user ...

I bet the Speedstream is already running NAT for you (seems like it..if the WAN interface of your own router is getting a 192.address)...and the Speedstream is already running PPPoE for you..in which case you don't want to run it a second time on your own router.

What I do on my setups, is either ...

Let me look into that, thanks.

Would that also be the reason why it keeps on changing it's IP and disconnecting/reconnecting?

Why is this happening all in a sudden tho when i haven't changed a single setting?

Nope, it's a 3.2Ghz the last time i've checked. It's a Prescott.

My guess is that the MB doesn't support 3.2Ghz Prescott yet. It mentioned support for 3.2Ghz but not specify for Prescott, only specified 2.8Ghz Prescott

P4 3.2 Appeared as 2.8

Hi guys,

I just recently bought a SFF, Skyhawk IMC6375( http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/systems/SkyHawk_IMC6375_1.html ) and a P4 3.2Ghz chip. When I pop the chip in, it shows up as 200Mhz x 14 = 2.8Ghz. As far as i know, the 3.2's should be running @ 200Mhz x 16, however there are no ...

I tried to buy an "identical" drive and swap and curcuit board. It seems like it's the board's problem. The HD started up with a clicking sound, however won't recongnize it due to the difference in the curcuit board (even tho it's the same drive - WD 40GB 7.2k rpm 2mb cache)
