This site has good info ( http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/ ) and would explain why my conection has been more stable since I restored the original settings about a month ago and went with DSL Reports suggestions. (no ping loss, same speeds as before but more steady.)

This is a copy of your config.sys I'm going to edit it and if you want copy and paste it in your config.sys file and save it.

Make sure your original is backed up and that this is the only thing in the file (remove any of the other stuff so there is nothing loading twice.

Do you have text when you boot or the windows splash screen.

This is the setting I used for my ram disk.......

But I ended up using the one EA had on his signiture, it lets you make any size ram disk you want.

If you see EA and get the program make sure you restore your original config.sys ...

Are you getting a message or do you have the splash screen come up and can't see the message.

If it is something in your config.sys it should give you the line number where the error is, but I'm not sure if you have the splash screen you may not see it because if it's not too bad it may not halt ...

Just a thought, next time someone deletes those files by mistake,
if they are on 98 or 98SE they can be found and extracted from the 98 CD in a cab file \win98\net#

the #'s for 98 are Net10, Net7, Net8, Net9.

They are all there and can even be extracted to a floppy on another PC, then copied from ...

I have a soundblaster and have that problem with dos emulation
when I change or moved either of my nics. I used to delete it from
device manager and it would take the next IRQ every time. I don't really use sound in dos so I now have it disabled.

And like I said it keeps the main hard drive from becoming fragmented.

Ramdsk "temporary internet files"

In Internet Explorer/Tools/options I changed my temporary internet files to my RamDrive and after a reboot I lost everything but my cookies. No pun intended :-)

I find that the web pages load quicker and I don't have to clean up the hard drive as often.

Seeing that you more than likely had your vid card installed first, try and remove it from Device Manager and see if it will take another IRQ. If that won't work this will for sure if you have the option to disable Plug N Play on your Nic (Via a jumper on the nic). Once this is done enter Bios , PNP ...

I notice while setting up a new dsl modem that the reg. file supplied by the ISP for NT was in a different reg key than windows 98 and was in hex. These settings were for RWIN and MTU.

That 1554 MTU I will bet that after you change it in the reg yourself or with cablenut you will stil get 1554. let me know after you do all the patches and fix your reg

I run with Sympatico on an org Nortel and get an avg of 820 from there HSE test page.

I use to get about 415 avg. With tweaks you can get better speeds.

Try to search the reg. for your reported MTU
not the value you typed in for your mtu. It may not be the same for you but it did work for me.

I run on DSL PPPoE and could never get above 1454. But MAXMTU was set higher. So I did a search for 1454 (had been reported by TCP/IP Analyzer ) and found it under .

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\0006

Here I found some info to do with the software my ISP suplied to ...

I had a problem very much the same after installing my 2 nd NIC and tried switching locations on the motherboard didn't help.

But I have used this a few times and it works everytime......

Remove any SB devices in your Device Manager and reboot, if there was a conflict it should take another IRQ ...

I had the same problem with my MTU not changing. All patches manual tweaks, nothing worked. Searched for my reported MTU setting in the registry and found the numbers in my ISP entry and until I changed them there I was stuck with what they had set.

If your using IE 5 or better you can restore
it back to the org. by going to ..

Add/Remove in control panel scroll down to
Internet Explorer and click on add/Remove
you will have three options here, choose repair and it will restore it to org.
