Round thing is pretty vague but I would guess that it is either the underground ped where the tap is or a lock box on your house where the splitter or ground block is.

I have been involved in at least 2 service calls that have had 3 or more techs leave the customers house (including myself) with no service. The integrity of the inline from tap to modem is fairly easy to troubleshoot and maintain. This situation sounds like customer service keeps sending techs out ...

I install in NJ and when we encounter 59 we are required to replace it. But like said before 59 is capable of carrying the signal.
So that is the question. What are the levels at the modem and if low, how can they be corrected?
Even if the landlord does not allow running 56 from the ped or pole, it ...

It does sound like the tech that came out doesnt know what hes doing because he should have been able to check the lines.
It is a pretty straight foward process. If you have a good signal at the tap and it is not good at the modem, the problem is in your house. Maybe he found a problem at the tap ...

You should be ok with the way you described your setup. If you still have problems and you do not have the equipment to check your signal, you will need to call and get a service tech to come out.

It depends on what the signal is at the splitter and other factors.
Typically the modem is supposed to get a dedicated line at the ground before any other splitters that feed your house.
If the signal is good (>4dbmv)at that first splitter and there is no other integrity problems from that splitter ...

That day I tried different ISA cards to no avail. There was one PCI slot but the sound card was blocking it. So I ...

No offense taken. I am a sub contractor and we are kind of on our own. The more experienced installers show you what they can but they do not pay you during training, so I told them I was ready.
I have run into problems I was able to solve but it will be a learn as you go situation.

OK, Thanks. I was able to connect to the Net so I could have just downloaded the new IE then. I was busy just trying to find Outlook.
I found it very wierd that a newer version of 98 would not have Outlook. The owner probably deleted it since they were using AOL before. c-ya
