Outlook Express

Post by MaxMan »

I am a @home installer. Today I went on a computer that had win98se but not Outlook express.
I could not find a way to download it for them to use the email.
Could anyone tell me where I can download a full version of Ooutlook Express to burn to a CD?
I already looked at ms.com but I couldnt find a full version, just patches and updates.
Thanks

Just download Internet Explorer, it will download Outlook Express with it if you select that option from the menu.

I could be wrong, but some version of Outlook Express should be on the win 98 cd - then there is also windowsupdate, which should show or list an updated verson of what is installed.

Go to windows update and click on veiw installed updates. So you can see the list of things that had been installed scroll down to outlook express and get it off the web.. Its that simple http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
If it don't come up then get IE off of the updates..
Or pop in the CD go to add/remove proggys and go to installed components and check the list.. it will add from the CD then..

If it's a win98 you should go in in Add/Remove Programs , Windows Components and it's there under Internet Tools :)

Good luck

The safest way is to download and install a newer version of Internet Explorer. Outlook Express has been integrated with IE since 4 came out. You always want to to re-install IE with a least the same or a newer version, you don't want to carry an older version and try to install that. Main reason, Windows runs on explorer.exe, it's how windows browses itself. IE installs newer versions. You can really hose the OS by trying to install an older version. Newer version do have safety checks that will keep you from installing an older version by accident, but I've seen enough machines in the server dept that were hosed by the installation of an older version.

Also just upgrading IE, since it upgrades the explorer.exe, also can help a slightly flakey OS run better. It's a good quick fix sometimes. Ever see illegal operations occur at explorer.exe?

OK, Thanks. I was able to connect to the Net so I could have just downloaded the new IE then. I was busy just trying to find Outlook.
I found it very wierd that a newer version of 98 would not have Outlook. The owner probably deleted it since they were using AOL before. c-ya

No offense taken. I am a sub contractor and we are kind of on our own. The more experienced installers show you what they can but they do not pay you during training, so I told them I was ready.
I have run into problems I was able to solve but it will be a learn as you go situation.

The training consists of riding with another installer and doing his work without pay while he gets paid.
Obiviously this gets old fast, so you get the guy to tell the boss hes ready, then you are on your own. I did have prior cableTV experience and I have three computers that I networked, so that got me in.
Right now I am just learning the little problems that come with customers that do not take care of thier computers or mess around with things the impede performance. And I Hate win95 and IE 3.0
We get paid according to what we do. Typically $50 for and cable-data. Service calls are $25 and custom work like wall fishes depend on difficulty.
I had a much better week this week than last.

It's gotta be tough being thrown out there on your own so quickly. From my job, knowing the conditions of some of the computers out there, just wait til you pop in a NIC and get faced with a Windows Protection error on the first reboot, with the customer anxiously breathing down your neck for his fast connection. After years and years of working in the field, I still had the dreaded protection errors. Now try to solve one without any training or senior tech nearby.

So far, knock on wood, I havent destroyed any computers.
On my first day I faced a P90 win95 that would not reconize any card I installed(hence my first post to this board "winipcfg").
That day I tried different ISA cards to no avail. There was one PCI slot but the sound card was blocking it. So I moved the sound card to another slot and put a PCI card in.
When I went to start the computer, nothing.
No sounds that would indicate that this computer was alive.
Now with the owner breathing down my neck, I proceeded to sweat profusely.
So I took stock, re-opened the computer and pushed all the connections in, said a couple hail marys and started the computer.
It started fine but still would not reconize the card.
So to make a long story a little longer, I told the customer to get a new computer if they want broadband internet access.

Ah an old P90 system, probably non-plug 'n play BIOS on it, it would be good to learn how to install hardware such as NICs "the manual way". Meaning forcing it in, learning the common I/O's and IRQs that a NIC uses, how to assing them in Windoze, and how to assign them in the NICs BIOS itself.

After reading these boards for the last couple of weeks, it is obvious I have alot to learn.
My ultimate goal is to get into home and small office networking. And i thought I knew a little something, not no mo.

Don't worry so much, it's on the job learning yourself as you come across these problems where you learn the most, plus forums, and hopefully you carry cell phones with you to call others who may know as you face a problem.

There is another sneaky way to get OE5 on to their computer. Use the @Home cd, exit the autorun, double click My Computer, right mouse button on the @Home icon (probably the D drive), go down to explore, double click on the Install folder, double click on the IE folder, double click on the IE 5.0 set up file, this bypasses all of the rest of the @Home software and downloading the files from the net and installs ONLY IE 5.0 and OE5 on to the computer.

As I've found out, your never going to know enough and everyday, you'll learn something new, and I do mean everyday! :) Technology is moving way to fast to keep up with, unless you work among the developers.

Yeah I always carry CD's with me that I find various software on, one if which that always comes in handy is Internet Exploader. The @home version may be a customized version though, and I never install those. Do you see the MS Blue E in the upper right corner, or the @Home logo? Well, if you're installing @Home it probably doesn't matter much anyways, but I just can't stand customized browsers, they often lead to headaches, and upgrade problems.

3COM CD's often come with tons of software on them, such as zip utilities, , Adobe, IE, Nutscrape Communicator, etc.

Just go into the control panal Under add and remove Icon. Click on windows setup. You should be able to install OutLookExpress if they are still useing the ie that came with it. If not go to the menu and click on system Information. Once the window opens up click on tools . Under internet setting click on add you should be able to add the outlook express from there for there explorer. GoodLuck!
