My Cable modem is really slow... like... 600 ping slow

Post by FirstBlood »

this is becoming a really big problem... i play counter-strike all the time... and recently, my ping has been.. on average.. 600 non-stop... and i'm on a cable modem

the service is from a local company called blazenet... and i've had problems before, but none THIS big...

what should i do? i'm pretty much clueless on the subject... so step by step things would be nice

thanks...

Do a Tracert.

Open DOS and type:
tracert (server address)

Look for where the ping rises. Copy & Paste the results here too so everyone can take a look & suggest a solution.

I can relate... Try running trace routes to different websites. By going to MS DOS prompt and type tracert www.yahoo.com, then hit enter.
Copy & Paste the results up here. I will try to help you by troubleshooting where the trouble spots are.
Also what service are you using cable or DSL? most likely cable.. Who is your provider and what area are you from?

Blazenet is in the process of shutting down and turning all its customers over to Suscom, the local cable company.

Your problems may be associated with this changeover. If they have equipment and circuits that are overloaded, they probably won't be fixing them.

There must be more than that. Let the trace complete, then post the whole result.

ok at the top of the DOS box (make sure you're running it in a window, not full screen), you'll see a square made out of dotted lines. Click that. Then highlight the text in the window. Click the clipboard-like thing up at the top of the box (that says Copy when you mouse-over it). Click that. Then paste the results here :)

FYI,
1. windows 98 is unable to support the speeds of your provider without tweaking.
2. your trace route shows a bottle neck in Philadephia. most likely a problem with the amount of traffic going thru that router or equipment problems on part of the owner.
3. might wanna try ARRIS for your modem choice. they will consistently do 4.5Mbps in support of 5Mbps provisioning
