No matter where I trace, the 5th hop times out. Meanwhile, my internet seems to work fine. What's this? I don't get it? I am going thru a home router (Linksys)

Other traces had stable pings and still times out on always the 5th hop.

Tracing route to yahoo.com

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms ca-thoaks-cuda1-c3b-1.vnnyca.adelphia.net

2 14 ms 15 ms 11 ms 68.69.31.141

3 12 ms 12 ms 11 ms 68.66.255.201

4 13 ms 15 ms 13 ms 24.48.217.137

5 * * * Request timed out.

6 *

Anyway, are there tweaks specific to gaming instead of internet browsing?

My site has the most up-to-date settings. Your problem is with that timeout, 24.48.217.137 is in Aldephia's netowrk, so it is more than likely an ISP issue. You should contact them about it.

I have Adelphia here in Maine and tracerts are doing the same thing on this end. Seems like ever since Adelphia started tiering their broadband into two categories, ie Premium 3000/384 and Regular 2000/256, I've noticed this.

That's Interesting about adelphia. I thought maybe it was just the hops from California where I live that were failing going thru the 5th server.

I asked before but still don't have the answer: All these tweaks seem to be geared towards net browing and downloading. Are there specific tweaks to improve online gaming? Is there a site that specializes in that?

TO j79 and hybrid monolith:

Sorry, but I don't get it. J79 recommended the settings from his site while Hybridmonolith says his settings are correct for 3000/384. WHo is right?

Hybrid's setting are figured for a 3500 down connection and his buffer sizes are smaller than recommended. Use want you want, but I still say mine are correct. Your main problem is that ping timeout, that is probably slowing your connection down more than anything else. You are going to have to talk to your ISP about that.

I am sorry about that. Try these and see how they work.

Please explain these differences between j79's settings and Hybrid's settings:

Large buffer size: j79 819200 Hybrid 81920 (factor of 10)

MediumBufferSize: j79 150400 Hybrid 15040 (factor of 10)

SmallBufferSize: j79 12800 Hybrid 1280 (factor of 10)

DefaultTOSValue: j79 240 Hybrid 92

Those larger sizes increase the buffer size, it has been found that this helps to stabilize the connection. The old values work well, but these work better. The TOS value was suggested by Cablenut (the man not the program) I personally have never seen must difference one way or the other with that setting.

Adelphia is researching the issue. They found the problem is at a road runner server.
