Don't you think its kinda strange

Post by Mystic »

Just as an aside here. Don't you think that its kinda strange that someone else posted this "general" method over two years ago on this very board and got told that it was impossible and that he was a liar. Others who were so knowledgeable, saw to it that he got ran off and that his stay here was as uncomfortable as possible. He was harassed at every turn by others on this board. He may not have outlined the technical specifics exactly like it was done at the links in this thread, but he did outline the general concept. ha dhe been more of a technically orientated person I think he would have outlined it more along the lines of what was posted in the links. I think a lot of the older people will remember who this person was, the name was 'Violent'.

i think there are some people on this board who owe him an apology if they ever get the chance to give him one.

I just thought it was kinda "deja vu' like.

At that time the CMTS were run by @HOME. The modems were provisioned by the CMTS having their MAC and IP set into them. Without that the modem would never aquire "sync". Everytime the modem would "reboot" the new config file would be renewed by the one in the CMTS. That would limit the modem back to it's original "caps".

Today the modems are provisioned from the "bottom-up". The modem will aquire sync without the CMTS having their IP or MAC in them. The bootp file is sent to them on the "reboot" when they are registered for service. After that this method could work if you could "fake" the modem to load the bootp file from your computer. As long as you don't reboot the modem it would run on your boot file. You could changed the caps all you want. Don't think that the ISPs don't know this already. They are scanning for modem running out of their limits. All they would have to do it tell it to reboot and it would load the boot file from their server. If they do this enough to one customer they could shut down the service for that modem. Bye bye internet service..........

It's not that easy to switch ISPs. Most of us is lucky to have broadband and not many of us have the choice to choose. That is why they can do anything and we can't do anything because we can't go back to dialup. In a field with no compeition... they are king and we are addictied to the king's services.

I agree with you most people do not have any options and the providers know it and take full advantage of it. I am not a strong advocate for government oversight but in cases where the industry has mergers that limit consumer choice the FCC and Congress need to take a closer look.

Sure it is. :) I've managed to change ISPs several times and am looking to do it again (soon as my MegaPath contract runs out). :)

well looks like you life in a pretty good location (to be able to do that), some of us happen to live(?) out in teh 'boonies'

ex; I have only one option for broadband
the crappy cable connection I have; there's nothing I can do about it either; until the local phone company decides to redo the wiring and/or add a CO closer to where I live.. (DSL Option)

Yeah, except I had to change every time b/c of connection problems and lack of action on the ISP. I didn't want to change that many times and go through all of that.

Since I posted the Uncapping Editorial I would like to mention something. It seems to me that a lot of the pro uncapping people are missing a rather large point.

Whether or not you take some or all of the bandwidth between you and the cable company is only part of the problem. You are also taking access away from others on the outbound connections they have to the telco and from there to the internet.

I don't know why people assume there's these monstrous 800gb pipes from every cable copmpany. That's simply not the case. Backbone access is NOT an infinite resource, far from it, and in fact the cable companies pay a lot of money to various telco's for short and longhaul backbone access. So not only are you abusing the system between you and the cable company, you are in fact abusing their internal networks and their fiber backbone connectivity as well.

This is especially problematic in oversold areas, where your throughput is causing others, even outside your node, to lose fair access to traffic capability they have paid for. You are not just stealing from your cable company, you are in fact stealing from your fellow broadband neighbors, all the people trying to use the outbound connections.

As an aside I am having the Editorial pulled for review. Primarily because the equipment and methodology of deployment has changed. Those of you with working experience in DOCSIS or with the cable companies will certainly be invited to contribute to the updated version.

what you are doing, it's near impossible to do. The instructions are incomplete for a novice, like me, I can't figure it out. Looks to be impossible on anything but linux anyway. I'm not installing linux for something that may or may not work. Even if it did work, you'd be silly to bust open your caps and take a chance on losing your connection.

I don't believe this post was designed to aid those requesting uncapping help. It's more for just informational purposes. For those who desire to know the technology behind DOCSIS systems.

If you succeed, you will get caught.

Are you on OOL? 998 is not a standard cable upload. I've only seen OOL and some @Home regions with uploads like that.

That's typical for OOL and far better than the avg. cable provider. :)

IMHO, it's stupid to chance termination of your service -- and possibly worse -- when you're one of the lucky few to have OOL. :)

You've got to be kidding me. Your upstream is already nearing a T1 -- a several hundred dollar a month business class connection -- and your download is as faster or faster than the majority of cable and DSL users. Why do you need more upstream? Are you hosting servers?

Then you should get a business class connection -- SDSL or T1(s). By helping your greed I'd be hurting a lot of others in the process, not that I even presume to know how to uncap. I'm not even on a cable connection. Don't you realize that most residential users have mere 128kbps or so for an upstream?

I believe you are getting bits and bytes mixed up.

900kbps (kiloBITS/sec) = about 112KBps (kiloBYTES/sec)

Reference my sig. if need be.

The upload alone is more than some people download. Hell, it's more than some peoples upload and download combined. :)

oh please hehe, i was uncapped for a good 6 months before @home crashed and burned.. one of their employees (who i didn't know) did it.. then.. wala.. 1 mbit up/6-8 down.. and no issues.. that was the most stable my cable ever was.. never cut out on me etc... he did something to the frequencies he claimed.. so i said whatever. i didn't host, didn't over use, nada. just enjoyed a good connection for gaming. then @home went down the crapper and here i am on charter, bairly getting 1 mbit down and 100kbps up if i'm lucky. at least they fixed the packet loss.. i called them and they told me ip addresses didn't exist. it was some lady.

Don't uncap.

Read your ToS. If you uncap, you are instantly placing yourself in a position to be turned off AND prosecuted.

Duh.

And, just for you meatballs that think you deserve that bandwidth because you pay $50 a month, go price a T1.

Oh yeah... for those who don't think too much, uploads are capped in order to limit colisions on the network.. NOT because of servers and the like. If you bump up your upload speed, you affect EVERYONE on your node. This is not only theft of service, but DENIAL OF SERVICE, which IS ILLEGAL and STUPID.

Uncap, if you must, but if you get caught, the legal ramifications are much more that you think.

Enjoy the dial-up service you will be stuck with, after you get out of jail.

Just sitting in the backround reading some of the amazing posts...Worry not all...there will be changes in the near future.

This is my personal opinion...

Is uncapping your modem stealing? If I was sitting on a jury I would have to say "NO". There are many reasons for my opinion, it is only my opinion, your opinion counts to and I will not criticize you for your opinon.

If the cable company is over selling bandwidth to create profits for stockholders and is deyning any paying customer what they agreed to for a profit is the cable company stealing from you the consumer? YES

I don't uncap personally...its just not me. I don't run a any kind of server and I don't care if any of my neighbors are running a server (which many do). I have a real life with more important items to be concerned with. I just wish I had a choice of cable providers to choose from and or that my Congressperson / Senator would stop taking soft money for votes and stop being against the people who voted them in office. <this is where you and I are getting taken advantage of.

As Presidental Canidate once said "people you have a choice" it does no good to whine or complain (unless it makes you feel better) all of you youngesters get out and vote against the "Congresspeople / Senators who only have one objective! "To profit from their position in office or big compaines who f*** you and I the average person.

Look at the big picute and not what is in front of you, think for yourselfs, stop listing to whoever screams the loudest!

Just my thoughts and opinion...........
