HELP, RAMDRIVE screwed up!!

Post by TheGameFreak »

Hey all? well my computers all screwed up. i'm at my friends house typeing this cause my comp dont work (internet wise). Ok heres what i did: I looked into my ramdrive, i only had 5 files, vtcp386,wsock2, wsock, mstcpdll, vudp386. and there saposted to be 7 right, i was missing ndis.vxd, and wshtcp, so i looked into my windows\system file, found those files, cut/pasted it into my ramdrive, than rebooted. when i rebooted, i looked into my ramdrive, and they were missing. i opend up IE and i couldent connect to the internet. i tried to run the batch file, but it dident even work, i unstalled my ramdrive, ran the restore bat file. rebooted. abunch of errors came up when i rebooted as like this one: " Exception Esockerror in molecule MMTASK.Exe at 00069E9B 10093: sucessful WSAStartup not yet performed" Please someone help!!! i'm so confused, i thinked and thinked for HOURS and couldent figure out how to get back my NDIS file back or my others!!! Thank you for all your help. i'll be checking back laters. THank you so much

Well hopefully you wrote down what you did also, try booting from a boot disk, or in safe mode, and make sure you edit your autoexec.bat and remove the file renames, and file copies. If you have the files that you manipulated written down, go to windows\system folder and look for them, rename them back to their original names. And remove the ramdisk command from config.sys. you want config.sys and autoexec.bat to look like they did before editing them, and again RESTORE the original names to the files that you renamed in the autoexec.bat. Good luck.

and when you are done, try it again, next time you will know to write it all down in case it still doesn't work for ya

and incase you run Win ME, you should know that as of yet I have not found a ramdrive that will work on it :(

if you click on the link in my sig for the RamDrive it tells ya that it is not for Win ME...... if that is the one you used I have a little advise, always read things fully before you do them :)

NORM I load my TCP/IP and a few others through the RD and it keeps just fine, I don't lose it on reboot.

I use the one in my sig :)

i am very new here and to tweaking in general. i know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous. along with that comes being scared. when i set up my ramdrives, i got to the point where it said to back-up and i ALMOST didn't do it. it seemed like too much trouble. to make a long story short, i rebooted and my pc was all screwed-up. my recovery.bat file i had made saved me. i was able to get back on-line, come here and EvilAjax told me what was wrong and i fixed it. i learned my lesson, i will never do any serious tweaking without back-up. anyone else reading this, that is new especially, Please back-up your files.
Thanks -

Don't know if your still there or not Gamefreak, but obviously by now you've figured out that you should have copied, not cut.

What version of Win9x?
Have to know that before telling you how to restore those 2 files.
Beyond that, a reinstall of the Win9x system over your existing install will restore you also, although you will lose a few minor personalized settings.

ndis.vxd
vtcp.386
vupd.386
mstcp.dll
wshtcp.vxd
wsock.vxd
wsock2.vxd
and i have no idea how to get them back, i ran safe mode, tried to restore my computer's reg. from 3 days ago (before this happend) but still its not in windows, no where. i run my "find files" and cant find crap. I called gateway (Tech support) and they couldent help me. So my final option is YOU Guys here or just delete my whole computer and start from scratch!!!

I don't have any version of 98 currently loaded on any machine, so I can't give you step by step, but -

From the "run" line , type SFC

When it comes up on one of the tabs you'll see something similar to the wording, "extract " and "extract to" and "from"

The "extract" is the name of the file you want.

The "extract to" in your case would be C:\windows\system

The "from" would be your Win9x CD.

Do this for EACH file on your missing list.
Then reboot.

Hmm... Where could them .dll's have gone? I'm not sure if it's safe for me to upload them to you... but I will try.. Give me your e-mail address.

Before setting up my RAMdrive my autoexec and config were both empty. I added this to my config.sys
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 700 /E

rebooted, then the RAMdrive was created... then to add the files I added this to my autoexec.bat
PATH=E:\;%PATH%
rename c:\windows\system\ndis.vxd ndisvxd.bak
copy c:\windows\system\ndisvxd.bak E:\ndis.vxd
rename c:\windows\system\vtcp.386 vtcp386.bak
copy c:\windows\system\vtcp386.bak E:\vtcp.386
rename c:\windows\system\vupd.386 vupd386.bak
copy c:\windows\system\vupd386.bak E:\vupd.386
rename c:\windows\system\mstcp.dll mstcpdll.bak
copy c:\windows\system\mstcpdll.bak E:\mstcp.dll
rename c:\windows\system\wsock.vxd wsockvxd.bak
copy c:\windows\system\wsockvxd.bak E:\wsock.vxd
rename c:\windows\system\wsock2.vxd wsock2.bak
copy c:\windows\system\wsock2.bak E:\wsock2.vxd

That's how I have mine set up... Im not sure what you did... did you try the recover? I'd hate to say this... but if nothing works... you're going to have to format.. or maybe reinstall windows again...

I just read the first page... Why did you try and paste it there? Why didn't you execute this through autoexec.bat? Oh man... I dunno... that sucks ass. Mine only has 5 files also... BTW, it's vupd.386... not vudp.386... I dunno man...

Hi. I recently made a RAMdrive of 150MB (keeping 106MB for my OS). I deleted the lines Set Tmp and Set TEMP because I did not want to mess around with my registry and I only wanted increased surfing speed. It worked :D
My web pages open quickly and I have noticed a small increase in my DL speeds. Now I have 4 questions: How do I take 50MB from my RAMdrive and give it back to my OS? My RAMdrive has 149MB of RAM free currently. Will I notice any decrease in my internet speed if I do this? Also, can I add the lines,
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 700 /I

to my Config.sys file after the fact? What else can I add to the Config.sys file and in what order? Thanks Norm, Lobo, Ajax, and all for your great advice. It's been a pleasure reading :)

By the looks of it you used the ramdrive I either made an installer for or you read the article I wrote and did it manually.

In that case, to reduce the size you need to edit your autoexec.bat. In it you'll see a line similar to this:

XMSDSK 51200 I: /C1 /T /Y

The 51200 is the size in KB 1 MB = 1024 KB
to take 50 MB away and have 100 MB for the ramdrive just change that number to 102400, save the file, then reboot.

Havin fun? :)
Having great fun Norm. Btw, nice dental work :D j/k. Yes, I read your superb article and installed the RAMdrive manually. Here's what's inside my Autoexec file:
rem 153600 = size of desired drive(1024 x 150), I: = desired drive letter, /C1, /t /y - leave these the same
XMSDSK 153600 I: /C1 /T /Y
md I:\TEMP
md I:\Dap
Now do I replace both instances of 153600 with 102400?

Hi SannieRose :) The first instances you see is proceeded by the three letters: "rem". REM means "pay no attention to this line of words/numbers. Change them both... but the second instances is the one to change to make things happen.

Good luck. Sounds like you're having fun

Like Doc says, it is ignored as long as the "rem" statement is there.

Change the second occurance of the XMSDSK line only!
Too late! :eek: Here's what my change(s) look like
rem 102400 = size of desired drive(1024 x 100), I: = desired drive letter, /C1, /t /y - leave these the same
XMSDSK 102400 I: /C1 /T /Y

Hey guys? well i had no choice but to format my computer. now i have to start all over again. But i tried to reinstall me ramdrive. It worked perfectly until i rebooted. Ok i added these things into my config.sys:
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 700 /E
and added this to my auto.bat:
PATH=D:\;%PATH%
rename c:\windows\system\ndis.vxd ndisvxd.bak
copy c:\windows\system\ndisvxd.bak D:\ndis.vxd
rename c:\windows\system\vtcp.386 vtcp386.bak
copy c:\windows\system\vtcp386.bak D:\vtcp.386
rename c:\windows\system\vudp.386 vudp386.bak
copy c:\windows\system\vudp386.bak D:\vupd.386
rename c:\windows\system\mstcp.dll mstcpdll.bak
copy c:\windows\system\mstcpdll.bak D:\mstcp.dll
rename c:\windows\system\wshtcp.vxd wshtcp.bak
copy c:\windows\system\wshtcp.bak D:\wshtcp.vxd
rename c:\windows\system\wsock.vxd wsockvxd.bak
copy c:\windows\system\wsockvxd.bak D:\wsock.vxd
rename c:\windows\system\wsock2.vxd wsock2.bak
copy c:\windows\system\wsock2.bak D:\wsock2.vxd
Rebooted, went to IE, and couldent connect to the websites. Hum.. when i open my ramdrive, i now have 7 files, instead of the 5 i had earlier. Could someone help me out?

Thanks Norm. Next question: I downloaded your RWin tweak. It says the size of my RWin is 25552. Not so. See below. Oh, and I have not changed the RWIN size yet.

Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
