How to change Rwin with Tcp Optimizer?

Post by hawk112 »

Hi,

i want to change my Rwin.
I do it in the registry HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters and done a new folder with DWORD-Wert and gave them the name "TcpWindowSize" and took the number what i want for Rwin there.
but after a reboot the page http://www.speedguide.net shows me that the Rwin is still the same like before

Why does i cant change it?

I do it surely with administrator in regedit.
And i disabled TCP Autotuning.

And with TCP Optimizer i dont find the task to change rwin there.
How can i Change my Rwin??

The test sites are setup to work with the old single stack versions of Windows, where as all the newer versions of Windows (Vista, 7, 8,etc.) use the newer dual stack.
There is no longer a setting for RWIN, although you can adjust the Autotuning & several of the other settings, the test sites (SpeedGuide & DSLReports) CAN NOT & DO NOT show the actual RWIN setting any more. All I aim for is a 100% efficiency setting (no packette loss), since most other information given is no longer valid.

Okay, i thought Speedguide.net shows me the actuall Rwin.
Ok but with the optimal Settings in TCP Optimizer my internet speed dont go better, its still 13 k from a 16k dsl.
3k is lost, i dont know why.
My Router becomes 15,5k but i only 13k.
What can i do?

First off, if you haven't done it yet, is connect your computer directly to your router with a network cable. If your speed comes up then, you're losing throughput because of your wireless adapter &/or settings. If it doesn't, then you'll have to contact your dsl provider & have them check out your lines & modem. They should be able to do this from their end.
DSL comes over phone lines so, if you hear crackling or static on your phone calls, it will drop your throughput. I have run into people not getting the promised throughput simply because of having the wrong settings at the providers end.

Note: If the first person you talk to can't or won't help you, keep trying not all support people are of the same level of ability or desire to help you out. Also be nice, these people talk to unhappy people all day (really who calls support if they're not unhappy?), talking to someone who's not yelling at you, makes a world of difference.

I phoned last week with the support of vodavone.
Because i had only 11 k
they said to me i should defrag my Pc and and clean my registry.

The SG TCP Analyzer shows the actual RWIN that your end advertises, however, since Windows 7, the OS auto-tunes (changes) it on the fly depending on network conditions, it does not report the same RWIN value with each connection. The Optimizer can still adjust how aggressively the RWIN is being allocated.

Make sure ctcp is enabled, try some diffserv settings in the advanced tab to see if it makes a difference in the TCP Analyzer results (if your ISP is not overriding it). Other than that, there is not much else to do if you're getting close to your ISP's rated speeds.

I found this over on Dslreports:

"Your upload speed as you stated is 128 kbps, which if you divide by 8 equals 16 kB/s (what it shows in your status window.) minus overhead equals 13 kB/s.

Unfortunately if you want more speed , you`ll have to pay more for an either faster dsl speed package or cable line."

It would seem that, like the others suggest, you're getting all you're going to get. If you can find anyone in your area with the same service, you could compare your service with theirs.
As for what to ask your provider's support people, ask if they can explain why you don't have your full advertised speed?

Tweaking RWIN according to SG TCP Analyzer in Windows 7

Post by elsag »

Hi everyone!
I understand that under Windows 7 there is no more RWIN setting to be adjusted with TCP Optimizer 3.08 but only the aggressiveness of the Auto-Tuning.
However running the SG TCP/IP Analyzer at http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php shows me:

« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
Tested on: 2015.04.11 04:36
IP address: 79.43.xxx.xxx
Client OS/browser: Windows 7 (Firefox 31.0)

TCP options string: 020405ac0103030401010402
MSS: 1452
MTU: 1492
TCP Window: 66784 (NOT multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 4 bits (2^4=16)
Unscaled RWIN : 4174
Recommended RWINs: 63888, 127776, 255552, 511104, 1022208
BDP limit (200ms): 2671kbps (334KBytes/s)
BDP limit (500ms): 1069kbps (134KBytes/s)
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 45
Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON
IP ToS: 00000000 (0)

It suggests me to tweak the RWIN:
"For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
63888 (up to 2 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44)
127776 (1-5 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2)
255552 (2-14 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2^2)
511104 (8-30 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2^3)
1022208 (25-60 Mbit lines depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2^4)"

So, how should I tweak please the RWIN according to the proper suggestion, in my case e.g. to 255552?

The RWIN is always present, your end of the connection still advertises a RWIN value, and the Analyzer can read it. The difference is, with newer "auto-tuning" TCP/IP implementations, that advertised RWIN value changes with each packet, the OS automatically changes it based on "network conditions".
