Recently got into vintage audio...new to me toy

Post by loop2kil »

Just got a Technics SA-616 @ 80 wpc and all I can say is wow, this thing is awesome.
Crystal clear and loud...got it hooked up to my DCM KX-212's and letting it play through my top 1000 playlist at volume #4 and can hardly breathe. I know my neighbors are hating me right now. :D

What's it say for a production date on the back? 1980?

That seemed to be the year of great Audio equipment. I had a Yamaha R-700 back then, but living in an apartment, I could never fully appreciate what it was capable of. I also have a Technics SL-B202 Turntable. Won't maintain speed anymore, but it's still here. Some day, maybe I'll fix it just for fun.

from mp3 to flac, no way, but from CD to flac maybe.

sorry, didn't mean to sound like an audio elitist :)

it's just that HDD space is so cheap now days, why not use flac IMO

I have a good bit of my stuff in flac and comparing to the same song in mp3 there is a noticeable difference in clarity. That being said, a properly encoded 192+ mp3 still sounds pretty damn good.

Whatever happened to .shn?

Thought that was the sh*t, but it's been years since I last was into my "download all the live music you can" kick.

Answered my own question:
FLAC > Free Losless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP-3, but Lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality?

Shorten (SHN) is a file format used for compressing audio data. It is a form of data compression of files and is used to losslessly compress CD-quality audio files (44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo PCM). Shorten is no longer developed and more recent lossless audio codecs such as FLAC, Monkey's Audio (APE), TTA, and WavPack (WV) have become more popular. However, Shorten is still in use by some people because there are legally-traded concert recordings in circulation that are encoded as Shorten files. Shorten files use the .SHN file extension.
I have months of music in .shn files

Frankly, receivers have not changed much in that time, save for digital processing and surround channels. Vintage implies tube gear.

That was the time of great receivers. A friend still has FM/AM Stereo Receiver SA-616 and it still works properly and the sound is good.

You would think so, but the "kids" of today think 80 is vintage. Heck, my new HTR has a computer in it. Self diagnostics and such. Could have used that back in vintage 80!

Heck I still have my Lafayette Criterion 2001+ Speakers from 1976. If you place them just right, they are amazing sounding speakers.

They sound great if they're positioned correctly or in acoustically built room. Put them in the wrong place and you have no Bass sound.
