He committed genocide against his own people and did it at an alarming rate. Can't say that I would go out in the streets and party that he is dead, but his death certainly doesn't make me sad.
I never said Saddam wasn't a horrible man. He was, and quite frankly he deserved to be locked away for the rest of his life.

But... cheering? It's just that one thing that shocks me more than anything else. That we, who condemn someone for murder, subsequently cheer his murder.

I'd be more likely to cheer for his death than his live in jail.

Hmmm, he wasn't murdered, you should look up the definition of the word.

Depends on the definition, some say unlawful killing, some say intentional killing.

Killing someone, in any form it might come in, is murder.

Bear in mind, you can't logically say that just because the State sanctions it that it is no longer murder, else Saddam's killings weren't murder either - since he was the State.

Edit: Here's a defination for you.
mur·der /ˈmɜrdər/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[mur-der] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. Law. the killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law. In the U.S., special statutory definitions include murder committed with malice aforethought, characterized by deliberation or premeditation or occurring during the commission of another serious crime, as robbery or arson (first-degree murder), and murder by intent but without deliberation or premeditation (second-degree murder).
2. Slang. something extremely difficult or perilous: That final exam was murder!
3. a group or flock of crows.
–verb (used with object)
4. Law. to kill by an act constituting murder.
5. to kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously.
6. to spoil or mar by bad performance, representation, pronunciation, etc.: The tenor murdered the aria.
–verb (used without object)
7. to commit murder.
—Idioms
8. get away with murder, Informal. to engage in a deplorable activity without incurring harm or punishment: The new baby-sitter lets the kids get away with murder.
9. murder will out, a secret will eventually be exposed.
10. yell or scream bloody murder,
a. to scream loudly in pain, fear, etc.
b. to protest loudly and angrily: If I don't get a good raise I'm going to yell bloody murder.
So yes. By law, it wasn't "murder". Then again, none of the deaths that Saddam caused were either... they were completely legal under Iraqi law...

Edit 2: I'm not saying that Saddam was justified. *sigh* I realize this could be read like that, and it's not what I mean. It's just a semantics game now more than anything, and I'd rather not play it. Saddam was killed for acts he commited, and then we cheered. That act of celebration is offensive, to me. That's it.

Websters definition:

1 : the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought

Yeah, so he wasn't murdered and he was a murderer. LOL and the people that he murdered were not brought to trial, found guilty and then executed, then you may have a point. He just killed people on the spot, and that is murder, no if ands or buts about it.

*sigh* In a dictatorship, the word of the dictator is law. It was not a democracy. Look throughout history to find plenty of examples of where one person's word was law - any dictatorship or monarchy will do just fine for that.

Just saw the footage of his hanging. Not really appropriate probably to post publicly, but if it's your thing to see it drop me a PM.

What saddens me most of this entire situation is the fact that we as humans still find it appropriate to lower our standards to that of the very "monsters" we choose to destroy, regardless of lawfulness. Then to parlay the matter, we turn around and soak ourselves in vengeful celebration that completely wreaks of the very same subliminal hatred we continue to oppose.

Mankind suffers a tragic weakness to vengeance. If mankind has any focus on morality whatsoever, then perhaps after a few more generations of this ongoing barbarism more of us will begin to view the hypocrisy of the death penalty with clear distaste. Afterall, we do consider ourselves "civilized", don't we?

What Would Jesus Do? Probably not seek out online video of Saddam's execution and then high-five his college football fanatic, beer-guzzling, war-gives-me-a-boner buddies in celebration.

Read some more of the Left Behind tripe and fellate Rick Warren while you can, there aren't many microbreweries in hell.
