Crunch time.....

Well, now that I was so stupid to sign up for @home, and after reading all this, it's cold feet time. I would like some expert opinion on which questions to ask the installer....What information I should gather to make it simple to hook up the router (after he's gone).....Do I have a choice on using their proprietary software (I
'd rather not).....if so, any workarounds? Since I won't have a static IP, what potential hassles can I expect?
I am not a gamer, not a porno freak, and don't plan on running a server. All I really need is fast access to up/download work for my business. Once again I defer to your collective wisdom for guidance

1), if you're running a business, do not make this known to the installer. @Home is for residential/recreational use only, and they can fail the install on the spot if you tell them it is for a business.
2) Tell the installer that you don't need the @home software installed (you really don't need it as you can do everything the @home software can through IE or netscape, but at a much faster speed)
3) Get a copy of all the network information from the installer (ie, computer name, ip address, subnet mask, gateway, dns, domain) so you have that information for your router.
4) Have him use netmail.home.com for your incoming/outgoing mail servers as opposed to the local mail servers (they are notorious for going down)
5) Once the install is done, tweak your system with the guidance found within this web site

the reason i ask is because mine is just "mail".

Yep, like damaged said, anyone can use them...there are numerous other servers to use, but that one is the easiest to deal with...

Yes "mail" is just like a shortcut in Windows. Abbreviation. Its really something much different

Using 'mail' in the incoming and outgoing mail servers just points to the actual mail server through the proxy server on your isp's service...sort of like typing in 216.167.23.73 instead of www.speedguide.net

Hope everything goes well for you on your install...I wouldn't completely go by what the majority of the people say about their experience here, simply because most people come here to vent about a problem or find a solution to a problem...rarely do you see someone posting about a great install experience...

With my experince with @HOME installer. First the kid looked in DEVICE MANAGER to look for conflicts, and of course he found one with an old sound card I didnt remove. He stopped right there and left would not wait for me to correct the problem. Had to reschedule for another install date weeks later, after waiting for weeks in the first place. Good luck

How can you blame the installer for that? You should of had that fixed b4 he got there, I would of. What should he have done, wait while you piddled with it? If you say yes how long should he have waited? What about the other installs he had? Screw everyone else cause someone couldn't be bothered by making sure they had a functional computer.

you know everyone seems to have a lot of problems with cable and dsl. LOOK AT THIS HUMONGOUS SPEEDGUIDE.NET FULL OF PROBLEMS

Pretty soon im gonna whipout my 9600 baups analog modem and my 386 sx with 4 megs of ram and start using that.

Unfortunately.....that lasted all of 45 minutes before it ground to a halt.
On the bright side.....the Contractor/installer seemed to be knowledgable, was very friendly, polite, etc. And they buried my problem aerial drop to end that problem once and for all. Now if it only WORKED
