if you're just starting w/ Linux, I'd say SuSe ... if you feel like yanking all your hair out and setting your crotch on fire I'd say Debian or Gentoo ....

Keep it simple. My personal reccomendation is Mandrake, although nowdays there's not as much difference as there once was.

The important thing is you don't get put off by the install and give up, like most people seem to do.

Depends on the computer specs really. For a newer system, all the fancy fluffy graphics with the "boxed" distros with full blown KDE or Gnome desktopsare ok. For older systems, I say use Debian with a good window manager like Fluxbos and no full blown KDE or Gnome desktop. There are tons of good install guides on the web for all versions of linux. (see sticky in Software forum here)

I second Tony's Debian vote. It's really not that hard to install. Gentoo is good once you get it compiled and configured. Out of all the ones I've played with Deb seems to strike a sweet spot. All the RPM based distro's I've run seem bloated and sluggish in comparison.
Now if Gentoo could eventually move allot of it's installation over to scripts than that would be awesome. Try playing with Knoppix at first that way you can get the feel for it without messing with your HD. From there you could install Kanotix or go for straight Deb. Libranet is another Deb based distro with a simple install.
Check out this site for some info:

It's all a matter of taste so you'll need to see what works best for you. Running on a separate drive is always a good suggestion but more so during the experimental phase of finding your flavor.

If you want a real OS I say break the trend and go with Plan9. ;) :D

Good man. The less stuff you install, the less a hacker has to work with. Make them bring their own tools.

Fedora is the easiest distro to install and get going out the box. Even without a GUI its a nice distro.

I'm running Gentoo right now.

Gotta love the "emerge -uDp world" command. :)
