Open My Document Folder, disappears within a second

Post by iKwak »

OS: Windows XP Pro
Windows Updated and all Patch installed

Starting today, when I open My Documents, within seconds, the document folder disappears and the bottom panel where it has the green start button, it disappears also for good 4 seconds.

Then the bottom panel reappears and the My Documents folder is closed. I try reopening and does the same thing. I checked for adwares and viruses but none to be found.
This is really puzzling me and very annoying.

Any solutions you may know? Thank you in advance.

5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600

I got a response from another board and he told me to right click and choose manage. Under Event Viewer, check Application and choose one of the Information. This is what it says:

Code: Select all

The shell has stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
For more information, see Help and Support

Explanation
The shell was stopped and then restarted. By default, the shell is explorer.exe]

Hmm...what should I do now?

possible causes, others's w/ same issue:

"I have Windows XP Pro and I installed McAfee7. Outlook XP hangs after 10 min (also no connection with XWin). I disabled McAfee services: everything ok. So I downgraded McAfee to version6: problem solved."

"My video cards were set at 32 bit color (high). I changed one card to 16 bit high color. When I clicked "applied" my monitor reacted out of range and was frozen and I had to reboot. SiS 6326 video driver caused this problem."

From a newsgroup post: "I too have this problem and the solution as of now is to run my folder windows in a separate process. In “Windows Explorer” go to “Tools-->Folder Options”, go to the tab “View” and check "Launch folder windows in a separate process".

"Some users reported that removing WS_FTP helped them to get rid of this problem."

Hmmmm, in addition to the other comments, I see this as a few different possibilities...

---------------

Shell extentions installed by some software...
I do not know how computer savy you are... If you know about the registry, ou want want to check out:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex
and remove any un-needed add-ons.
*****UNDERSTAND that editing the registry can totally screw up your operating system!!!!*****

Before even thinking about doing that, back up your registry and make sure that you have enough understanding of the registry... Again, this can hose your box very easily.....

-------------

This may be the best for you to try, using XP...
You may try to restore to a point that you know was good, before the problems started. Again, this almost has to be a result of software...

You could even try hitting F8 on bootup to get to safe mode and go with "last known good config..."

------------------

It could be that explorer.exe has been corrupted... You could try replacing it... Get it from your disk...
