Unanswerable question

Post by DREK »

Hi all! :p

Since a while , when I finish Internet Explorer/Outlook Express , it appears on desktop , an unknown file called ''~''.

Anyone have an ideia what this means?
I ran anti-spywares/anti-virus and nothing... There is any trick to stop this file ?

Ps : When I click on properties... it says only the size ( 200kb)

That's a backup copy of the *.wab used by OE. It's a bug in the latest OE patch that was released a few weeks ago:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... bContent=1
OE has always made an automatic backup with the same name but the extension changed to .wa~. Now it creates the backup copy in what seems to be a somewhat random location and names it only "~". I had one on my desktop, and just deleted it. Then I got another one is a folder that has nothing to do with OE (go figure). But I haven't seen it happen again for a couple of days. I haven't really spent much time on it since it's not a dangerous bug, although it could well be worrying if you don't know what it is. And there are security implications if someone starts sending the file around to others trying to figure out what it is.

Thanks about your information.. but how can I fix this bug? :(

Because:

NOTE: After you install the Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6.0 SP1, you cannot remove it

I don't think your going to fix it. We'll have to wait for Microsoft to make a patch to fix the patch again.

Ok.. thanks..
Btw, look can you tell me why my Internet Explorer doesn't put automatically the ''http'' on the webpages?

When I type in the adress bar ''www.speedguide.net'' , it gives me the message ''about:blank'' , it just works when I type "http://www.speedguide.net''...

I already did everything.. install IE 6 , update all bugs , unistall , set up the advanced options.. but without sucess..

My Windows is 98 SE .. anyone can give me a light?
