So far our client that was using the setup has reported that the system has been working fine since the firmware upgrade. I haven't asked about the WUSB11 dropping out, however, they did not say anything so I assume it is no longer dropping connection... ;)

Yep... our customer has a similar setup. BEFW11S4 and a WUSB11 ver 2.5.
Same problem. Linksys told me that there was a known issue that they were just made aware of....

My provider (Time Warner/Road Runner out of Cincinnati Ohio) gives two IP addresses with a standard account.

I am using a switch to give my PC one of the IPs and the other IP to my router for the rest of the LAN.

One thing I now try when a Linky won't pull an IP when it would before:

1) boot up a working PC hooked up to the modem directly and set to obtain from DHCP

2) verify it has pulled info from DHCP and surf for a minute

3) record the information (IP, DNSs, etc...)

4) unplug the cat 5 from that ...

What really confused me about the way they did it was that I could see it. I never could before. It wasn't until I started to have trouble with a system in the DMZ that I started really looking, though...(I still can't put that IP in the DMZ or it crashes 2 ...

Behind the router, all of the LAN IP addresses are fixed. We have been running like this for years on dial up and for quite some time now on broadband.

It just seemed weird....

Now when I TRACERT 192.168.1.1 (the Linksys router), I get spider.columbus.rr.com.

Using a LinkSys Router (BEFSR11). 192.168.1.2 is NOT in the DMZ. No ports are forwarded to it and all of the systems are running ZoneAlarm.

A few weeks ago, I suspected that her system had a trojan, however, I found nothing. This new xterm2.columbus.rr.com thing is starting to rekindle my suspicion ...

Definately not as elegant as a static IP, however, I might suggest looking at one of the free IP redirection services.

We use http://www.dns2go.com

Check it out, it might solve some of the headaches in the short term.

If you really wish to be secure, this is what I would do...

2 NICs per PC and 2 switches total.

TCP bound to the internet NIC and NETBUI bound to the other in each PC.

FYI: being on the internet means your Dad is on a network!!! (the biggest)

Anyway, I wouldn't run RR medic. I don't think it is required anymore and I have seen it cause some problems. It does NOT assign you your IP.

You didn't say what RR system you were on. Some actually give you two IP ...

Sounds to me like your IP lease is expiring and a new one is being obtained from your provider's DHCP.

Go to the server and check under more info on your IP addy and see how long until the lease expires. In Win9x, that is under winipcfg and hit more info tab. Under NT varieties I can't remember.
